About the Book

A book that proves that where you start doesn’t have to decide where you finish.

From Struggle to Strength

Discovered: Dusty Roads tells the deeply personal story of Johnny L. Nettles, who grew up in rural Alabama as one of eleven children, fatherless and surrounded by poverty. But the struggle was not the end of his story. It was the beginning.

What It Means to Become a Man

This book speaks to anyone who grew up with questions: about identity, fatherhood, manhood, and legacy. Johnny writes with honesty about what it meant to be a Black boy in the segregated South and how that experience shaped the kind of man he chose to become.

A Legacy of Service

Beyond the personal, Discovered offers a broader reflection on systems, community, and responsibility. Johnny’s work with at-risk youth spans decades, and his life offers proof that the past doesn’t define you. It prepares you.

About the Author

Johnny L. Nettles was born on January 29, 1951, in Castleberry, Alabama, the eighth of eleven children. Raised by a single mother after the loss of his father, his early life was marked by poverty, faith, and perseverance.
He was the only one of his siblings to graduate from high school and later earned his degree in Urban Planning from California State University, Northridge. It was a leap that would shape the course of his life.
While building his life in California, Johnny fell in love with a woman who accepted him and his firstborn son. Four years later, they married, and together, they’ve built a family that now includes three children and four grandchildren.
Johnny spent 32 years working in one of the largest juvenile institutions in the world: the Los Angeles County Probation Department. He rose through the ranks to become Assistant Superintendent of Operations before retiring in 2008.
Throughout his career, Johnny dedicated himself to helping young men navigate systems he once barely escaped himself. He became a mentor, a father figure, and an example of what quiet leadership can look like.
Now retired, Johnny spends his days traveling the world, checking off his bucket list, and sharing his story with the next generation. This way, they know they’re not alone, and their start doesn’t define their finish.

What This Book Leaves Behind

Discovered: Dusty Roads isn’t just a reflection on the past. It’s a guide for the present. It reminds us that resilience isn’t about perfection, but about showing up. That fatherhood is learned. That silence can be broken. And that even if struggle is the only inheritance you know, you still get to decide what comes next.
